Acid Flashback Friday: the 1989-1996 Home Uniforms

With the official demise of Flashback Fridays, it looks like Acid Flashback Friday remains as the only look back to Blue Jays yesteryear.

This week, we honour the classic home uniforms from the 1989-1996 seasons.

Surprisingly, the club donned these for the Flashback Friday on August 8th during the Back2Back Weekend, and I have to say they looked very sharp.

It was a very nice change from the very loud powder blue jerseys. Nothing against those uniforms, but the home white uniforms are much more traditional and don’t look like a novelty uniform like the powder blues.

There’s something about this uniform in particular that conjures up so many good memories of this ball club. Maybe it’s because the Blue Jays won four division titles, two American League Pennants, and two World Series during the tenure of this particular uniform.

Maybe it’s because there so many iconic images of Blue Jays players wearing the classic white home uniforms that we mostly associate this jersey with good times from the past.

Since the Blue Jays will no longer we sporting the powder blues on Friday home games, why not have them wear the home white uniforms instead? They would look great as an alternate jersey the Blue Jays could bust out every once in a while.

I agree these uniforms were awesome and symbolized the great winning traditions of Blue Jays baseball

However, these uniforms were used from 1989 through 1996

Check out the National Baseball Hall of Fame website which shows every uniform of every team on an annual basis since the early 1900's. Its pretty cool to see the evolution of each team as well as how awful uni's were in the 70's and early 80's

Best uniform the team has ever had and I still don't know why it was ever messed with in the first place. I'd love to see a return to this set. No more black and grey. BLUE Jays!

Love these. Mix in a solid blue cap….maybe update the number scheme so they aren't so soccer-ish (?)….winner.

Roy, thanks for the tip! Originally I was going by Chris Creamer's sports logos website, but the Baseball Hall of Fame website is much more detailed and thorough. It's been changed, thanks for the heads up.

Jason, they are my favourite as well. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the current road grey's either – they don't really fit in compared to the home whites/blacks. Hopefully they bring back these retro white uniforms every once in a while though.

I have one of these jerseys, circa 96, with Carter's 29 on the back. They were always my fave

Ack, I love how those jerseys had the old Blue Jays font on the back that includes the players name (not just the number). A nice added touch. I can't decide between either the white panel cap, or the solid navy blue – either or is good in my mind.

Anon, one Leafs team in Toronto is enough in my mind. I know the Raptors did something similiar with the Huskies, but I don't think there's enough of a demand for it.

Asher – you lucky dog. I have a similar jersey, except they were the alternate solid navy jerseys. One of these days, I will hopefully get Carter's name put on the back.

Yeah, something about Joe Carter jumping like a little kid around first base in that uniform will stick with me till I'm buried.

Can't imagine that isn't a marketing tool for an off year.

QJays, same here – that's why it makes so much sense to bring those jerseys back rather than the Powder Blues.

We should start some sort of petition to get the home white uniforms back in the mix!

It seems in this case my archive was TOO detailed and thorough for this posting, my site does list these jerseys as being worn from 1989-1996 but also makes note of the cap change which occurred in 1993 (hence why it is displayed twice on my site as 1989-92 and again 1993-96).

While I do agree that the Hall of Fame site is a great resource, it is not quite as detailed or thorough as my database which includes changes due to patches or slight cap modifications.

    Cheers!

Chris, by no means did I mean this as a shot towards you or your site. I visit it all the time and use it as my go-to source for logo references, jerseys, etc.

That was my mistake – I didn't notice the cap change in 1993, but they kept the same uniform until 1996. Looks like I need to pay more attention next time.
