Double dose of DL
Why does it seem like bad news always comes in twos? First it was Ricky Romero, now B.J. Ryan has been sent to the disabled list all within the span of less than 24 hours.
Many folks like Searching for ’93 have speculated for a while now that B.J. Ryan’s lack of velocity has been due to an injury. Turns out they were right, and I was completely wrong. I just assumed that B.J. was losing it and was just plain sucking.
I just caught J.P. Ricciardi on Jays Connected, and he said that they will announce B.J. Ryan’s bullpen replacement later this evening, and Ricky Romero’s replacement sometime tomorrow. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say that Jeremy Accardo is the one who gets the call to the bullpen. Ricky’s spot is a little tricky though; earlier in the day, the odds on favourite was Brett Cecil. Apparently now Bastian says that Brian Burres could make the trip up from Las Vegas.

Excuse me – what? Why not Brad Mills or Brett Cecil? The Blue Jays are considering calling up a guy with a 6.97 ERA in Triple A? Even Bryan Bullington seems like a better choice, but if Burres starts on Saturday against the White Sox it won’t be the weirdest decision that the front office has ever made.
This just in: apparently Ricky Romero tweaked his left oblique after sneezing. Damn, that hay fever really does take its toll on some folks.
I think it’s mostly a mental sabbatical, saving B.J. the embarrassment of being demoted. At least now they can force him to take a couple of “rehab” outings.
Having his job in question twice within the first two weeks is not easy. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a combination of an injury/extended vacation leave.
On Mills or Cecil… isn’t it because of the full-year-of-ML-service thing? I could be wrong; I’m drunk on vodka and Kool-Aid.
Me too! See the post above for more Scott Richmond love!
